Restricting Free Speech

June 12, 2021
By now I'm sure that Bill C-10 has come across your newsfeed. If it hasn't, you need to know what's going on.

Erin O'Toole
The government’s bill would restrict your right to free speech by regulating what you can say on the internet and on social media. Independent experts in this field have described this as internet censorship.

Today the Liberals were propped up by the Bloc to actually shut down Parliamentary debate on Bill C-10. They shut down debate on a Bill about freedom of expression. This was anti-democratic and appalling. The tactic they used to shut down the debate at the committee stage has not been used by a government in Parliament for 20 years according to Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa and Canada Research Chair in Internet Law. Not only are they playing dirty - but they were openly congratulating each other for the move to shut down debate in the chamber today.

They are taking unprecedented steps to ram this bill through without proper scrutiny or debate. It’s a bill that targets your rights directly and with total disregard. We are doing all we can to stop this overreach.

I am standing up for your right to free speech, not their preference for controlled speech. If this bill passes, a Conservative government will repeal it.
